Ford’s Mustang has a long and storied history, some of its legendary, other less so. Its third generation was produced between 1978 and 1993 and was built on its Fox platform, hence the model is commonly referred to as the Fox body Mustang. It evolved through several models, trim levels, and drivetrain combinations during its production life, and can generally be grouped into the 1979 to 1986 cars with their quad headlights and the 1987 to 1993 cars, with their aerodynamic composite headlamps. For 1987 the front end was restyled to look more like the former SVO model, which gave it an "aero" look, and the interior also got an all-new dash, centre console and revised seat and door trim. With the SVO discontinued, models were now pared down to the LX and GT. Taillights on the LX were revised with clear lenses for the turn signals, while the GT now wore specific body-coloured triple louvered lenses. The quarter glass windows lost their louvers and now sported an etched ‘Mustang’ in a single larger flush piece of glass. GTs featured new round fog lamps and gained aerodynamic lower bodyside skirts and new turbine-style 15-inch wheels. The V6 option was discontinued while the 2.3 litre four-cylinder gained fuel injection, leaving only it and the 302ci V8. The 5 litre Mustangs received E7TE heads and forged aluminium pistons with valve reliefs in 1987. Power was up to 168 kW and 410 Nm of torque. No major changes were seen for 1988, although the T-top roof option was discontinued midyear. For 1989, the Mustang's speed density computer system was replaced with a mass air system, with changes made to the intake, engine, and exhaust system, resulting in optimum power. Ford's only gesture towards a 25th Anniversary Mustang was small, a dashboard logo affixed to all models built between 27 March 1989 and the end of model-year 1990. Production of the Fox bodied Mustang ended with the introduction of the fourth-generation Mustang (SN-95) for the 1994 model year.
