In 1985, in a remarkable shift in engineering philosophy, the new front-wheel-drive Celica delivered a great driving experience: the poseur’s sports car had become the real thing. Who could have predicted that a front-wheel-drive Celica would offer a much more exciting drive than any of its rear-wheel-drive predecessors? Indeed, this 1985 Celica was one of the exciting cars of its time and provided the basis for Toyota’s serious assault on international rallying with the all-wheel-drive GT-Four. The ST185 model arrived in 1989 and was essentially a smoother-looking, more aerodynamically efficient and more refined rework of the 1985 car.
