The XM range, launched in February 1964 was the third Australian Falcon. Its XL predecessor had been catchily advertised as ‘Trim, Taut and Terrific’, but the XM went one better with the claim that it came with ‘Certified Golden Quality’. The styling changes from XL to XM were more significant than those from the original XK to the XL. The improved quality chrome used on the new model underwent a multi-step plating process and the stylish new radiator grille showcased this superior chromium beautifully. Ford Australia management was focused on building the Falcon’s reputation for reliability after a shaky start with the earliest examples of the XK. So there were extensive mechanical improvements, even more so than there had been on the XL. Big news was the arrival of an optional 200 cubic-inch Super Pursuit engine, available only with automatic transmission. The very attractive Hardtop variant was new for XM and was the hero model. The more luxurious Futura was a fitting rival for the Holden Premier and the Chrysler Valiant Regal and took some of its styling cues from the Thunderbird.
