Arriving in Australia in 1991, the SVX coupe was the most expensive and exclusive model Subaru had ever produced. With its gorgeous Giugaro bodywork, ultra-smooth yet characterful 3.0-litre horizontally-opposed six-cylinder engine and unique glasshouse, the SVX was a car for the connoisseur. Subaru had intended it as an alternative to a BMW but in reality it was more like a Japanese reinterpretation of the fabulous Citroën SM of the 1970s. Its sleek streamline was no illusion because the coefficient of drag was just 0.29. The smaller opening windows within the larger stationery ones made a major contribution to this utterly individual design. Note, too, how the shadowtone paint treatment makes the glasshouse seem even larger than it is, creating an airy feel: this design could belong to the twenty-first century! As for the name, it signified Subaru Vehicle X. Just 249 examples were imported to Australia and sightings are rare indeed.
