Chrysler’s VH range of Valiants failed to spark the Aussie imagination, being large and bulbous with surprisingly cramped interiors. But then came the astonishing Charger coupe built on a much shorter wheelbase. Throw in the brilliant ‘Hey Charger!’ advertising campaign and Chrysler Australia had a winner on its hands. The Charger 770 flagship had the same level of trim and equipment as the Regal 770, so equivalent to a Holden HQ Premier. The 265 Hemi six-cylinder engine was standard in the 770 and delivered superior performance to Holden’s 253 cubic-inch V8 with good fuel economy. While a three-speed manual gearbox was standard, most 770s were equipped with automatic transmission, controlled via a neat T-bar.
