In 1969 Australian Motor Industries (AMI), assembler of Toyotas, Triumphs, Ramblers, et al from Completely Knocked Down (CKD) packs, imported a batch of high performance Rambler Javelin 2 + 2 coupes. Additionally, they brought in just 24 of the special AMX, which was essentially identical to the Javelin except for a 300mm shorter wheelbase and a different angle to the fastback! AMI had experienced some success with its Rambler American and Rebel models, but perhaps the Javelin and AMX were priced rather too high compared with the locally manufactured muscle cars of the day. While these cars were far from a runaway success with Australian buyers, they sold well in the US with some 20,000 examples of the AMX being produced from 1968 to 1970.
