The swansong of the Australian-made Commodore was the VF series launched in June 2013, the second iteration of the fourth and final generation designed and built locally. Based on an improved Zeta platform, the VF’s front and rear styling was all new, while the interior was bolstered with the addition of an eight-inch touch screen, keyless entry, electronic handbrake and auto-park assist as standard features. The VF also used an all-new electric power steering system while optional technology included a lane departure warning system and a heads-up display. Various powertrain options were available, including the 3.0 and 3.6 V6s or the more powerful 6.0 V8. The high-performance SS initially used the L77 motor but for the VF II update in 2015 Holden employed the same 6.2-litre LS3 V8 found in contemporary HSV models, complete with Bimodal exhaust. The SSV added 19-inch alloy wheels, front fog lights, leather upholstery, sat-nav and an 8-way electric driver’s seat along with an upgraded instrument display. The ultimate SSV Redline saw both suspension and brake upgrades, launch control on manual cars, a sunroof and Bose premium audio system. Holden was one of the last carmakers to offer a manual option on their high-performance models, employing the proven Tremec TR-6060 transmission to good effect. Rated at 304 kW and with 570 Nm of torque, the LS3-powered SSV Redline will do the 0-100 km/h dash in under five seconds. One of the last great Aussie muscle cars, the VF II SSV Redline has become something of a modern classic and values are fast appreciating thanks to Holden’s untimely demise.
