The VN-model Holden Commodore was the first iteration of the second generation of this Australian-made model, produced between 1988 to 1991. It was a re-engineered hybrid of the European Opel Omega and Opel Senator models, paired with a Buick V6 or Holden V8 engine. The VN model Commodore sedan sat on a widened and stretched (previous model) VL platform and was available in Executive, S, SS, Berlina, and Calais specification levels, with a Utility also joining the range in 1990 sharing the longer wheelbase of the Commodore wagon and luxury Holden Statesman and Caprice (VQ) models. The Commodore SS was released in March 1989 and was the premium sports model of the VN range. It featured the 5.0 litre 165 kW Holden V8 engine, either TH700 automatic or T5 manual transmission, FE2 sports suspension, limited slip differential, a body kit that including front and rear bumper lips, side skirts, boot lip spoiler, unique SS alloy wheels and driving lights, plus unique SS interior fabrics which featured a grey/red checker design, and of course SS decals and striping. The VN SS was available in Atlas Grey, Phoenix Red, and Alpine White.
