The 1961 EK Holden was said by its manufacturer not to be a ‘new model’, which was, to say the least, an interesting marketing exercise. Perhaps GMH was keen to keep expectations modest because the Chrysler Valiant was due to enter the market in just a few months time. Certainly the EK boasted cleaner styling than the FB with more elegant use of chrome and less garish two-toning. The grille was neater. Indeed, the overall look of the EK was quite crisp, if a little dated by the time its EJ successor arrived in July 1962! During the currency of the previous FB series, GMH introduced its very durable ‘Magic Mirror’ acrylic lacquer to replace duco. The biggest news though was the coming of automatic transmission to Australia’s Own Car. This was the three-speed Hydra-Matic unit. Despite the arrival of the Ford Falcon in 1960, the EK continued to be easily the top-selling car in Australia.
