2000 HSV VX Clubsport R8 Sedan

Launched in 1990, the Clubsport quickly became HSV’s biggest selling model and enjoys a loyal following that continues to endure years after the brand’s untimely demise in 2017. The first three generations of Clubsport were based on Holden’s VN-VS Commodore platform but big changes were in the wind – the landmark VT arrived in 1997 on a wider platform with fresh styling. Holden replaced the long-running 5.0-litre V8 with the new 5.7-litre Gen III imported from the USA on the Series II in 1999, followed by the revamped VX introduced in October 2000.  Visually distinguished by the new frontal aspect and revised tail light design, the VX saw Bosch 5.3 anti-lock brakes introduced as standard across the range, along with traction control on manual cars and a tweaked chassis. HSV’s VX-derived Clubsport hit the market in early 2000 and featured a more powerful 255kW version of the LS1 V8, along with a more visually striking body kit and exclusive interior to help differentiate the car from lesser Holdens. Handling was improved thanks to revised rear suspension, while anti-theft protection increased through the use of Microdot technology. Clubsport R8 owners also enjoyed interior seats and upholstery matching the more expensive GTS, along with the premium climate control system and 10 CD changer.  Externally the R8 benefited from unique five-spoke 18-inch wheels and stronger brakes. Despite being HSV’s volume seller, the Clubsport was built in limited numbers and just 480 manual R8s were produced on the VX Series 1 base (plus a further 597 equipped with the automatic transmission). With values of later generation HSVs rising fast in recent years, the VT-VZ generation models represent excellent buying today, offering a lot of car for relatively little outlay.
