Porsche made significant updates to the GT3 for 2004 model year, using the 2002 996 facelift including headlights that were differentiated from the entry-level Boxster. This model is commonly known as the 996.2 GT3. Power was increased to 280kW backed by 385Nm of torque (80 per cent of which came on stream from just 2000rpm). The GT3 is fitted with a Metzger engine, meaning it is free of the perceived bearing issues associated with other 996 variants. It also features a stronger gearbox. Six-piston front brake calipers were introduced and the Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake System was optional. The 996.2 GT3 used the Carrera 4 body. Two versions were available – the circuit-ready Clubsport with rollcage and the Touring Pack which came minus the cage and fire extinguisher. Unlike the fixed seats in the Clubsport, the Touring Pack has electronically adjustable buckets. This latter variant is rare as the majority of GT3 customers at least had dreams of taking their car to the track. Porsche’s official test-driver Nürburgring Nordschleife in a 996 GT3 in 7 minutes 56 seconds, a feat which was used by Porsche to promote the car.
