Introduced in 1996, the Lotus Elise was the saviour of the company founded in the 1950s by Colin Chapman and made famous by cars such as the Elite, Elan and Lotus Cortina. Featuring a unique bonded extruded aluminium chassis with a tuned and mid-mounted 1.8-litre Rover K-Series engine as seen in the MGF, the Elise immediately fulfilled all Lotus brand expectations of a lightweight, lively sports car with exceptional roadholding and braking. Creature comforts were minimal, with occupants virtually seated on the floor, while weather protection was almost an afterthought. But the rewards of driving the nimble Elise easily outweighed these considerations and gave it a reputation as one of the purest sports cars on the market.
