Jaguar launched its all-new range of XF (X250) compact models in 2007 and added the flagship performance XFR variant two years later to rival the German über saloons, chiefly the BMW M5 and Mercedes-Benz E63, but at a price some 15 per cent lower. Its 375kW 5.0-litre supercharged V8 was notable for a colossal torque output of 639Nm, on tap all the way through from 2500rpm to 5500. The XFR’s superb performance was matched with outstanding handling and braking. It rode on handsome 20-inch alloys. The British car drew on Jaguar’s long tradition of building thoroughbred sports models, dating back to the company’s Le Mans glory years in the 1950s. The XFR also offered extreme luxury with softer, more cossetting seats than its German rivals and an appealing traditional English style of sybarism. A massive 300-watt Bowers and Wilkins audio system running through no fewer than 19 speakers typified the thoroughness of specification!
