The Holden Torana GTR XU-1 has become synonymous with Peter Brock’s first victory in the Bathurst 500. On a day of drama with heavy rain through much of the day, the intense young man with the so-dark eyes and long hair proved yet again that David can slay Goliath. The light and agile XU-1 with its race-tuned 3.3-litre six-cylinder engine and shorter braking distances, driven by the talented new hero, proved too much for the mighty Falcon GTHO of Allan Moffat and Peter Brock began his unparalleled string of victories at Mount Panorama. Brock’s Torana was the second edition of the XU-1, the original having been powered by a 2850cc engine. With its eggcrate grille, the LJ is also arguably the more aesthetically pleasing of the two. Among Australia’s celebrated breed of musclecars, the XU-1 is perhaps still somewhat undervalued and thus offers a bargain for the collector with a long view of history.
