Jaguar introduced its final iteration of the E-Type, the Series III, in 1971. Although overshadowed in collectability by its 6-cylinder predecessors, the V12 Series III has some distinctive qualities. As well as the formidable and unutterably smooth 5.3-litre 12-cylinder engine, a longer wheelbase and wider tracks make for improved handling and ride. There is the bonus of extra room in the cabin. Ventilated front disc brakes endowed the V12 E-Type with stopping power to match its formidable performance. For many enthusiast drivers, the unique Series III is the ideal E-Type. Despite the promised 276 brake horsepower, the Series III made no pretense to being a 150-mph car and Autocar (which had by this time lost its original The) recorded a maximum of 143. The charisma of the E-Type is italicised by the fact that Jaguar failed to replace it with a comparable sports car until the belated arrival of the F-Type in 2013.
