Holden Special Vehicles (HSV) was already producing some highly desirable cars (such as the 1990 SV5000) in the years before this last-of-generation VS Series II GTS was sold in 1997, the VT-based models following within months. In 1996, HSV delighted enthusiasts by introducing two new performance-focused innovations, the ‘stroker’ 215kW 5.7-litre engine and the advanced Hydratrak limited slip differential (you could only specify the latter if you had already ticked the options box for the bigger capacity engine). The highly focused GTS (lighter than the plusher Senator) was firmly established as the hero car in HSV’s growing lineup. It could sprint from zero to 100km/h in a whisker less than seven seconds, with awesome torque throughout the rev range.
