1984 Honda Acty Mini Van (Project)

Of all the Japanese manufacturers, Soichiro Honda’s eponymous company has always been at the forefront of cutting-edge technology, entering Formula One racing at a time when few Westerners were even aware of this remarkable man and his products.  Honda had a background in racing and a lifelong passion for both automobiles and motorcycles, something reflected in every product to wear his name.   Honda entered the Kei-class commercial vehicle market in 1977 with the launch of the Acty (short for Activity), a diminutive cabover van or truck based on a mid-engine rear drive platform.  Powered by a 545cc SOHC water-cooled engine producing 28 horsepower, early Actys drove the rear wheels through a four-speed gearbox, although a five-speed unit and even the three-speed Hondamatic transmissions were also made available.  From February 1981 Honda added a passenger version, badged as the Street in Japan, with the optional high roof body that was made available for the van as well, while the option of all-wheel drive was added in March 1983.  Honda facelifted the first generation Acty in June 1982, the most notable change being wraparound turn signals.  Although primarily sold in Japan, the Acty did reach some export markets like the United Kingdom and Australia.  Offered between 1982 and 1986, the Acty wasn’t sold in Sydney due to the hills and the few surviving examples are becoming increasingly collectible.
