The VK, launched in March 1984, was the first serious rework of the Commodore since the model’s introduction in October 1978. While the VK retained the platform and key dimension of its three predecessors (VB, VC and VH), its new six-light glasshouse made the car look bigger not only on the outside but from the inside looking out. Plastic bumpers replaced chrome. The VK was the last Holden to use the 3.3-litre six-cylinder engine which could trace its ancestry back to 1963 and the classic EH! Importantly, buyers could still specify a lusty 5.0-litre V8 engine when Ford Australia had ceased producing V8 engines for its Falcon in late 1982. By the time of the VK’s arrival, Peter Brock’s Holden Dealer Team Business was going gangbusters building hot Commodores and many owners added some of the goodies to their hot models! VKs were available in Executive, Berlina and Calais variants and with the long-wheelbase Statesman and Caprice consigned to history, the Calais V8 had to take over the mantle as Holden’s flagship.
