The Lancia Beta was introduced in 1972, the first fruit of Fiat’s ownership (from 1969) of the famous brand. In contrast to Fiat models in this sector (124 Sport Coupe/125) the Beta was of front-wheel-drive configuration like many of its illustrious predecessors. The superb Fiat twin overhead camshaft 1.8-litre engine (shared with the Fiat 124 CC Sport Coupe, but revised slightly to deliver stronger mid-range torque) provided sparkling performance with superb economy. The specifications of the Beta were very advanced for the day with five-speed gearboxes, "Rack and pinion steering" rack and pinion steering, fully independent suspension using MacPherson struts, both front and rear, and disc brakes on all four wheels. Very few 1970s cars keep pace with modern traffic as readily as the Lancia Beta. The original short-wheelbase coupe – as distinct from the later HPE variant – is increasingly rare. It is widely judged to be the most elegant of all Beta variants and served as successor to the Fiat 124 Sport Coupe.
