Right-hand-drive Chevrolet and Pontiac sedans were assembled in Australia by GMH from 1949 to 1970. Completely Knocked Down (CKD) packs were imported from the USD and Canada and these were assembled in most of GMH’s seven assembly plants throughout Australia (which meant a Pontiac Laurentian might proceed down the line sandwiched between a Holden EJ Premier and a Vauxhall Cresta!). The Chevrolet Bel Air and Pontiac Laurentian were mechanically similar, being powered by a 170-horsepower edition of the 283 cubic-inch V8 engine with automatic transmission from 1960. (The Laurentian nameplate was used in Canada and this variant was similar to the US Catalina.) The Australian Pontiacs had slightly more elaborate leather trim than Chevrolets but all came with a grey dashboard, crash pad and steering wheel. The GMH-assembled Chevrolets and Pontiacs were highly regarded by customers who preferred a large American-style luxury car to one from Britain or continental Europe and there was still a strong customer base from those who had chosen Chevrolets in the days before the 1948 advent of the Holden. For model year 1962, it is estimated that fewer than 200 Pontiacs were produced compared with approximately 1100 Chevrolets, meaning survivors are rare.
