Launched in July 1970, Holden's HG model was the final version of the HK/HT range and remains chiefly notable for introducing the three-speed Tri-Matic automatic transmission, standard on the Premier and Brougham but optional elsewhere across the model range. Once again Holden's full-size passenger car was marketed in Belmont, Kingswood and Premier versions, along with the upmarket Brougham and sports coupe Monaro and the light commercial utes and panel vans. Changes to the sheet metal for the HG were kept to a minimum, with only detail changes to the grille and rear, while powertrain options were largely the same. Buyers could choose between the 161/186-cid sixes or the 253/308-cid V8s (the Monaro could be ordered with the full-house 350-cid V8 as well) and the usual selection of gearboxes, including the new Tri-Matic.
