The sixth-generation C4 Corvette was launched to great acclaim in 1984, with great looks and excellent handling the two areas coming in for the most praise - indeed, Car and Driver magazine went so far as to describe the Corvette as "the most advanced production car on the planet". With rack and pinion steering, four-wheel disc brakes and forged-aluminium suspension arms the Corvette was certainly a big improvement on the outgoing C3 and the bodyshell was very aerodynamic whilst retaining traditional Corvette styling cues. The Corvette was still powered by the 5.7-litre V8, with Tuned Port Injection introduced for 1985. One unusual feature was the availability of a four-plus-three-speed transmission with computer-controlled overdrive on the top three gears. In 1986, ABS was standardised on the braking system and the long anticipated return of a convertible body style to the line-up. Changes for 1987 included roller hydraulic lifters, boosting horsepower to 240 at 4,000rpm and a total of 10,625 convertibles were built for the 1987 model year. Today, the C4 Corvette is a very affordable car to purchase and run, looks great and in convertible form is a great package.
