Cadillac introduced the DeVille name to distinguish deluxe versions of the hardtop models sold between 1949 and 1958, initially only two-door models but from 1956 this included the four-door version as well. The DeVille continued on through succeeding Cadillac generations as a more upmarket trim level and with the arrival of the seventh generation in 1985, came an entirely new model. Based on the front-wheel drive C-body platform, the new Deville lost about two feet in length and 600 pounds. Under the stylish new bonnet, the Deville was equipped with a cast-alloy, fuel injected 4.1-litre HT-4100 V8 engine (the only transverse-mounted V8 on the market) and four-speed automatic transmission. Diesel V6 and V8 motors were optional. Other standard equipment included power steering and brakes, tungsten-halogen headlamps, six-way power driver's seat, power windows and door locks, climate control, Delco 2000 AM/FM radio, power boot release and body-coloured side moldings. Another option, found on luxury cars of the period, was the 'faux convertible' roof that was available on the Deville coupe.
