The first car to bear Walter P. Chrysler's name emerged in 1925 was an innovative automobile featuring an impressive new six-cylinder motor and several industry-leading features. Designed by engineers Fred M. Zeder, Owen R. Skelton and Carl Breer, the high compression engine boasted a seven-bearing crankshaft, aluminium pistons, a carburetor air cleaner and a replaceable oil filter. Another feature unheard of on a medium-priced car was full-pressure lubrication. Hydraulic brakes on all four wheels were also an industry first at this price level and Chrysler's rivals Ford and Chevrolet were soon forced to follow suit. With rubber engine mounts adopted in 1926, the Chrysler Six was as smooth a car to drive as those costing a good deal extra and proved a big hit with the American car buying public - within three years Chrysler was up to fourth place on the domestic sales chart. The Chrysler range for 1927 consisted of the 50, 60, 70 and Imperial 80 models and period advertising suggested the 70 was so-called as it was capable of travelling at speeds of at least 70 mph.
