Description
Born in 1959, when fins ruled American styling, the Chevrolet El Camino utility vehicle was released to compete with arch-rival Ford's Ranchero model line. Intriguingly, the model only ran for the 1959-1960 model years before the badge went on hiatus, making these early El Caminos quite desirable today. These first cars were based on a two-door station wagon platform, and referred to as a 'coupe pickup'. The El Camino could be had with any of Chevrolet's full-size drivetrain options, which included the 235-cid straight-six along with 283-cid and 348-cid V8 motors in a variety of tunes. Three and four-speed manual gearboxes were offered, with the two-speed Powerglide automatic also available as an option. After the success of 1959, when 22,246 El Caminos were built, the number was reduced to 14,163 against 21,027 Rancheros for 1960. With that news, Chevrolet withdrew the model, only for it to return from 1964 on a Chevelle platform.
