Description
Holden's VK Commodore was the biggest revamp of the model since its original introduction to the Australian market back in 1978, updating the styling both inside and out. The exterior was distinguished by a new six-window design, with an additional quarter window added behind the rear doors, while a new louvred grille and integrated bumpers helped modernise the cars general appearance. For many pundits the VK was - and still is - the best looking of the first generation Commodores. Announced in March 1984, the VK also saw a major facelift inside, with a geometrical instrument cluster and better equipment levels across the range. The model line-up consisted of the SL, Berlina (which replaced the SL/X) and new top-of-the-range Calais, replacing the SL/E. The standard engine was the 3.3-litre six, now with a new Electronic Spark Timing (EST) engine management while Bosch LE-Jetronic fuel injection was an option on cheaper models and standard on the Calais. Only one V8 was available, the 5.0-litre unit, which changed from 5044cc to 4979cc early in 1985 to meet new Group A Regulations for touring car racing. Indeed, the HDT Group A SS homologation special, nicknamed the 'Blue Meanie' due to its distinctive colour, has become one of Australia's most coveted muscle cars.
