Shortly after announcing its impressive new XA Falcon, featuring the most local input of any Blue Oval product yet, Ford Australia introduced a luxury model, codenamed the ZF and once again badged as the Fairlane. Available in both six and eight-cylinder models, the Fairlane was sold as either the Custom or 500 and both featured power-assisted front disc brakes as standard (four-wheel discs were an option when the 351-cid V8 was fitted). The Fairlane differed from the Falcon in having revised front and rear sheetmetal, with four headlamps and distinctive full-with tail-lights. In November 1973 the revised ZG Fairlane was announced, incorporating a mild facelift to freshen the appearance along with changes to the suspension settings for an improved ride and better handling. Safety was improved through a redesigned front-end structure, while equipment levels were improved to keep pace with Holden's rival Statesman, including variable-ratio power steering. The ZG Fairlane boasted a vinyl roof (optional) and polished stainless steel exterior mouldings, high quality carpeting throughout (including the boot) and better trim levels. The standard engine fitted to the Custom was the 250-cid six, while the 500 received the 302-cid V8 and either one could be ordered with the optional 351-cid V8 for more performance. Cruiseomatic column-shift auto was standard on both Fairlane models, with the console-mounted T-Bar auto available at extra cost. The ZG Fairlane remained in production until May 1976 and has always been well regarded by those who appreciate the space, comfort and performance afforded by these classic Aussie luxury cars.
