The Oldsmobile 88 was produced from 1949 until 1999. Always a V8 and available in a variety of body styles, initially as a coupe and a convertible and then later various sedans, the 88 was Oldsmobile’s top-selling model from 1950 to 1974. Through the generations the 88 grew in size, both physically and in engine capacity, peaking in the ‘70s. The seventh-generation 88 was completely restyled and enlarged for 1971, riding on a 124” wheelbase and available as a pillared four-door Town Sedan, two-door and four-door Holiday hardtops, and a convertible. For 1973, wider and lower split ‘waterfall’ grilles flanked the new federally-mandated 5 mph (8.0 km/h) front bumper on all Delta 88 models. Larger one-piece rounded rectangular tail-lights replaced the four-segmented lights of 1972. Engine offerings included a standard 350 Rocket V8 with two-barrel carburettor 150bhp (112kW) or optional 455 Rocket V8 with four-barrel carburetion and 215 hp (160 kW) with single exhaust or 250 hp (186 kW) with dual exhausts. Model offerings were the same as 1972 with the Delta 88 Royale series now including the sole Oldsmobile convertible offering.
