Known internally as the 610 series and what we know as the Datsun 180B, this model was first launched in Japan in August 1971. Based on the out going 510 model (known to us as the legendary Datsun 1600), the Datsun 180B borrowed its drive train and class leading independent rear trailing arm suspension configuration from the 1600, with some modifications. Datsun released the Australian made 180B model in October 1972 as a four door sedan in Deluxe and GL trims, and an imported two door SSS coupe. It was fitted with the L18 1.8 litre four cylinder engine paired to a four speed manual or three speed automatic transmission. Datsun then upgraded the SSS to a five-speed manual in 1975. Over the base Deluxe, GL models added a vinyl roof, radio with separate speaker, upgraded interior upholstery and trim, cut-pile interior carpeting, chrome exhaust extension, rear mounted GL badge, and whitewall tyres. On top of that, the Japan-built SSS model added twin-Hitachi carburettors, sportier instrument cluster and interior trim, and different wheel covers. The 180B SSS was a popular choice among enthusiast drivers at the time, especially the manual model, and a few enjoyed success in rallying too. The 180B proved popular right to its discontinuation in October 1977, when the P810 200B range arrived in Australia.
