First introduced in 1972 as a sedan, the Alfetta range of Alfa Romeos was destined to take over from the famed 105-series cars with a more modern design and superior features. Still retaining the classic front-engine, rear-wheel drive layout, the Alfetta sedan was styled in-house, though a Giugiaro-designed coupe, the Alfetta GT, arrived alongside it in 1974. Sharing the transaxle layout and chassis of the sedan, the sleek coupe was immediately well respected as a brisk and crisp handling GT car, though with only a 1779cc version of the venerable Alfa DOHC 'four' it was thought to need more power. For 1976, when the last of the 105-series GTVs were produced, the Alfetta GTV coupe received a 2.0-litre version of the engine. There was also a 400-run Group 4 homologation special known as the Turbodelta, housing a 129kW turbocharged version of the 2.0-litre. The Alfetta GTV coupe finally came of age in 1982 when the GTV6 was introduced. Using a fuel injected version of the Alfa 6 motor, the 2.5-litre V6 brought the car alive and became quite successful as a Group A and production race car. There is a large Alfa club and parts specialist network here, as there is globally, so keeping these cars performing and presenting at their peak is relatively straightforward. They handle well, have enough power to be lively and sound magnificent. Popular across the globe and a respected rarity in Australia, the GTV6 2.5 is increasingly sought after today with prices rising accordingly.
