Mitsubishi’s 3000GT is a high-tech, high performance front-engined, all-wheel drive 2+2 hatchback sports coupé manufactured in Nagoya, Japan, from 1990 to 1999. It was sold in the Japanese domestic market as the GTO and globally as the Mitsubishi 3000GT. Mitsubishi’s replacement for the Starion, the 3000GT was sold in only extremely limited numbers in Australia (just 117). It was a technical tour d’ force for its time with its twin-turbocharged transverse-mounted 3 litre, 24-valve DOHC V6 engine (developing 210kW, four kilowatts more than Nissan’s heroic R32 GT-R of the same period), four-wheel-steering, full-time all-wheel-drive, electronically controlled suspension (ECS), active aerodynamics with automatically adjusting front and rear spoilers, and sport/touring exhaust modes. Its 2+2 cabin was similarly well-equipped, with every conceivable automated luxury appointment of its era fitted, though strangely cloth trim rather than leather was standard in this otherwise very high-line model. During its lifetime the 3000GT was updated just once, in 1994, with a revised front bumper to accommodate projector beam headlights (replacing the pop-up units of the original car) and small, round projector fog lights. Highly regarded even today, these Mitsubishi 3000GTs are popular and respected among devotees of significant Japanese performance models.
