Introduced in 1993 as a replacement for the 190 (W201) range, the C-Class was the smallest model in the Mercedes Benz line-up until the A-Class arrived in 1997. The C-Class is built at Mercedes-Benz factories in Sindelfingen and Bremen, Germany as well as numerous satellite factories in other countries. The first C-Class (W202) sedan was produced in June 1993 and ran until replaced by the W203 in July 2000.
In 1998 AMG developed a new flagship for the C-Class, the C43 AMG, powered by a 4.3 litre V8 which developed 228 kW at 5850 rpm, with 410 Nm of torque at 3250 rpm. It was also available as a station wagon. Something of a hidden gem in the C-Class line-up, often overshadowed by the better-known and slightly bombastic C63, the C45 was developed jointly by Mercedes Benz and AMG, the tuning house by then a subsidiary of Daimler-Benz. Only 4200 W202 C-class AMG C43s were ever produced.
