A year after the introduction of the all-new 911, Porsche announced the 912, intended the logical replacement for the legendary 356 model.  Designed as a more fuel-efficient and cheaper alternative to the six-cylinder 911, the 912 used the proven 1600cc air-cooled flat-four found in the last 356s.  Despite having only 90 horsepower compared with the 911’s 130bhp, the 912 was considerably (250 pounds) lighter, had better weight distribution and, as a consequence, more predictable handling.  Both coupe and Targa options became available with a standard four-speed manual transmission, although a five-speed box was, like on the 911, optional.  Because of its keener price and increased efficiency, the 912 actually outsold the 911 for the first few years, but it was more than just a cut-price 911; with four-wheel discs and fully independent suspension it was a capable sportscar and won its class in the European Rally Championship in 1967.  Australian customers saw a trickle of 912s arriving here in 1965 but it wasn’t until 1966 that deliveries officially started, making these early cars a rare sight on our roads.  Today the 912 has emerged from the shadows of its more illustrious stablemate, with plenty of club support and global spare parts networks able to keep the cars in fine fettle.  Prices have firmed but haven't yet mimicked the large price growth of the early 911s, so if you fancy a 912 now is the time to buy.
