In production for over 55 years across nine different decades, the Lincoln division of Ford manufactured 10 generations of the Continental. The first of those was launched in 1940 and by 1969 the Continental Mark III made its debut and was, like the original, only available as a coupe. At the time it was the flagship vehicle of the Ford Motor Company, the two-door hardtop Continental Mark III based on a platform shared with the Ford Thunderbird. To distinguish it from the Thunderbird, the Mark III was given model-specific design elements such as hidden headlights, a radiator-style grille, and a simulated spare tyre on the boot lid. Produced at the Wixom Assembly Plant in Michigan, the 1970 Mark III was the first American-made vehicle fitted with radial tyres as standard equipment, while tinted glass also became standard as did automatic climate-controlled air conditioning and SureTrak anti-lock brakes. Inside, high-back bucket seats were now standard too, while a rare special-order floor console was also available. Horsepower remained unchanged at 365 but the 460ci V8 engine gained a more sophisticated thermostatic air cleaner assembly with associated ductwork. 1971 saw the Golden Anniversary of the Lincoln marque, and the third and final year of Mark III production. Sales were better than ever at 27,091, before in 1972 the Mark III was replaced by the Continental Mark IV.
