Mitsubishi’s EVO (short for Evolution) was based on its mainstream Lancer model manufactured from 1992 until 2016. It was fundamentally created to give the Japanese manufacturer a platform to compete in rallying, but quickly became a ‘cult’ car, helped by its starring role in PlayStation games. There have been 10 official versions of the EVO to date, all using two litre turbocharged in-line four-cylinder engines and all-wheel drive systems. Tommi Makinen was Mitsubishi’s rally hero and, after winning four World Rally Championship titles in a row for the Japanese manufacturer, the Finn was honoured with a special limited-edition EVO called the Tommi Makinen Edition. Based on the six-generation Lancer EVO VI sold from 1999 to 2001, the Makinen model was available in two versions, the GSR (Gran Sport Racing) and the RS (Rally Sport). The Makinen GSR was the same as the standard GSR but with a lowered ride height, Tommi Makinen Edition front bumper, Red/Black Recaro seats (with embossed T. Makinen logo), 17" Enkei white wheels and a titanium turbine. The RS, meanwhile, was the same as the standard EVO VI RS but with a close-ratio five-speed gearbox, lowered ride height, Tommi Makinen Edition front bumper, and the titanium turbine. The Makinen EVO VI was the only one of its generation to be available in red, indeed, a number were built featuring a red and white paint job that closely resembled the Finn’s rally car.
