Launched in 2015, Ford’s sixth generation Mustang heralded a number of firsts for the famous badge, the most significant - for Australian buyers at least – was Ford’s decision to offer a factory right-hand drive car through the local dealer network.  Built on the all-new S550 platform, three engine options were initially available: the EcoBoost 2.3-litre four-cylinder, a 3.7-litre V6 and the Coyote 5.0 V8 while transmission choices were limited to a traditional Getrag six-speed manual or the six-speed automatic.  Under the shapely skin, this was the first Mustang in history to feature fully independent rear suspension, finally dispensing with the antiquated live axle set-up used for over five decades.  In GT configuration, Ford’s 5.0 V8 was the choice of traditional muscle car enthusiasts, offering bags of torque and plenty of character.  Developing a healthy 324 kW of power and 542 Nm of torque, the Mustang offers a degree of flexibility unmatched by the smaller engines, not to mention an intoxicating exhaust note only a bent eight can produce.  Earning virtually unanimous praise, the 2015 Mustang offers a fabulous combination of classic muscle car styling and performance at a price tag most of us can afford.  Replacing the hottest Falcons as Ford’s hero model in Australia and only sold in Ecoboost or V8 form, the Mustang has proven staggeringly successful here, becoming the Blue Oval’s biggest selling model after the Ranger.  In addition to a long list of factory options, the ability for customers to personalise their Mustangs has always been a big part of the model’s appeal and there is no shortage of aftermarket tuners and parts available to upgrade just about every component, inside and out.  Clearly there is still a market for a rear-driven V8-powered coupe and Ford’s iconic pony car has proven one of Ford’s greatest success stories.
