With a reputation for building some of the best-engineered motorcycles ever made, BMW has been manufacturing two-wheelers of the utmost quality since 1923. Based on the mechanical components of the pre-war R51, the first post-war BMW twin was designated the R51/2 when launched in 1950. Starting with the R51/3 of 1953, BMW launched a new generation of Boxer engines that would go on to become one of the classic engines and all Boxer engines up to 1969 were essentially derived from this unit. With the emphasis on smoothness and reliability, the new engine developed 24 horsepower and retained the chassis of the R51/2, with a larger fuel tank and similar four-speed gearbox. The R51/3 was further developed in its final year of production, 1954, with improved front brakes, 19-inch light alloy wheel rims and mufflers without a fishtail. With interest in classic bikes growing all the time, the early post-war BMWs are an ideal choice for someone looking to do club runs on the weekend. These beautifully made motorcycles are now very popular with collectors and can hold their own with the best British bikes of the era.
