The bevel drive engine Ducati 900SS was produced from 1975 to 1982 with approximately 6000 units produced in total. Breathing through gaping 40mm Dell'Orto carburettors, the 900SS engine produced 70bhp at 7,500rpm, an output good enough for a top speed of 135mph, showing the 900SS's competition heritage was obvious on the road. For 1981 the 900SS underwent extensive updating, gaining improved cylinder heads, Bosch ignition and later on a revised gearbox. Production ceased during 1982 after a little over 6,000 had been produced. The final 1982 900SS wore a dual seat as standard and rolled on FPS alloy wheels replacing the crack-prone Speedline items. Mufflers were now Silentium. And while the last 900SS was a more polished version of the 1975 rough diamond, it was essentially the same bike, and could still (in some markets, like Australia and South Africa) be ordered with 40mm Dell’Ortos and Conti pipes, releasing all the stifled power of the original 1975 machine. Ducati produced only 335 units of the 1982 model making it almost as scarce as the original 1975 model of which 246 were produced. So unrestored excellent condition original machines such as this one are extremely rare world wide.
