Building on the success of earlier models, Subaru released an updated version of the popular Leone model in 1984, combining the versatility of all-wheel drive with the long-serving ‘boxer’ motor. Offered as the Leone sedan and L-series station wagon, both were powered by a compact overhead camshaft 1.8-litre engine producing 66kW and could be had in either front-wheel drive or with Subaru’s clever all-wheel drive system. The 4WD wagon came with a reinforced sump guard, 190mm of ground clearance and a choice of dual-range manual transmissions designed to cope with a variety of terrains, while the MP-T automatic allowed the driver to select either front-wheel drive or 4WD at the press of a switch. Other features included fully independent suspension, front disc brakes and Subaru’s ingenious Hill Holder system. Offered in either basic DL and more upmarket GL versions here in Australia, the latter added features like power steering plus the option of an automatic transmission and the GL Touring Wagon had a raised roofline. The GL came with a long list of standard features, including central locking, power windows, cloth upholstery, a digital clock and rear window wiper. Costing $495, the optional Enduro Pack added roof racks, a bull bar and Sunraysia steel rims, along with special graphics. Pre-dating the craze for 4WD SUVs, these versatile wagons offered a great compromise between driving on tarmac and dirt and carved out a significant niche in the market here in Australia, enjoying a legion of loyal customers.
