Holden Dealer Team owner Peter Champion strived to keep the HDT name and Peter Brock's spirit alive, by producing a range of products to enhance everyday Commodore models, when the big Holden sedan was still in production here. Its first in 2007 was a modern take on the famous VH-model red Group 3 Commodore and then in 2009 HDT introduced its adaptation of the then-current VE model Commodore as a tribute to the legendary 1985 VK Commodore Group A, known as the ‘Blue Meanie’ for its distinctive colour. Known as the ‘Retro’ the VE-based ‘Blue Meanie’ had all the model indicia of the original, including the Formula Blue paint, full bodykit in the style of the original and Aero-look white-finished wheels. But of course, the VE base ‘Retro’ brought with it significantly newer mechanical and electronics technology, and was powered by a 350kW 6.0 litre V8, with a supercharged version also being available. A full leather interior and VE-model appointments added a level of luxury never even imagined in the original car. Production consisted of the HDT ‘Retro’ VE ‘Blue Meanie’ Group A SS, plus VE-VK Group A/3 and VE-VK Group 3 variants with only an estimated 29 units built of the VE-VK Group A SS built.
