The Firebird was produced by the Pontiac division of General Motors from the 1967 to 2002. Designed originally to compete with the Ford Mustang and Mercury Cougar, the Firebird was introduced simultaneously with GM's Chevrolet Camaro, the two sporty two-door coupes sharing the same bodies and mechanical platform. The name "Firebird" had been used previously by GM for several concept cars in the ‘50s and ‘60s, and there were ultimately four generations of the model. The final iteration, running from 1993 to 2002, amplified the sleek aerodynamic styling of the previous generation and again paralleled the look of the Camaro. Ninety per cent of the fourth-generation Firebird was new, though it still featured a live rear axle. Major improvements included four-wheel anti-lock brakes, 16-inch wheels, rack-and-pinion power steering, short/long-arm front suspension, dual airbag, and several composite body panels. Trim levels included the base V6-powered Firebird and V8-powered Formula and Trans Am models, with a T5 five-speed manual for the V6 and Borg-Warner's T56 six-speed manual for the V8s. The 4L60 four-speed automatic was optional for both in 1993.
